Q&A with Tali
After learning about Revols’ co-founders, Dan and Navi, we figured it was about time we heard from their counterparts. These startup wives have truly helped build this company from the ground up and have a lot to share! I got the chance to sit down and begin the discussion with Tali Katz, the Marketing Director at Revols. In true startup fashion, she helps take care of anything and everything. I was intrigued to learn more about her many roles as well as shine some light on her personality and interests.
What do you do as the Marketing Director at a startup company?
Like everyone on the team, I wear many hats and dabble in a bunch of projects simultaneously. I first started as the project lead of our Kickstarter campaign and oversaw everything from planning, to launch and eventually, all post-campaign activities. Since then I’ve continued to build our brand by managing all consumer touch points from packaging to PR to trade shows to the website and app development (focusing on the user experience side). I’m always trying to learn more about our target market, and I’m constantly testing how to best appeal to them through digital ads, eblasts and social media engagement.
Wow, you handle a lot! So, where did you work prior to Revols and how do those jobs compare to this one?
Prior to Revols, I always worked in Marketing but in very different industries -- in pharmaceutical and fashion retail. The companies were a lot more corporate in structure compared to the startup life I now lead. While I learned a ton from my previous jobs, I always craved a more creative and dynamic work environment and Revols has given me exactly that. I can definitely say this has been the most challenging and rewarding job I’ve ever had!
What made you decide that you wanted to be a part of the Revols team?
Well, that kind of came about organically. At the time of Revols’ inception, I was engaged to Navi. I really believed in the idea and knew the boys were serious about pursuing it so I offered to help out in any way that I could. Since neither of them had extensive experience in marketing, this “extra help” was much appreciated and quickly turned into a second full time job! My nights and weekends became filled with Revols brainstorming sessions and team meetings, and pretty soon it became clear that a full time marketing role was needed. My first mandate was to learn, study and “figure out” Kickstarter - a platform I knew little about prior to joining the team. June 2015 marked the beginning of my full time role at Revols and it’s been an insane ride ever since!
So, what’s it like working with your husband (CTO & Co-founder, Navi)?
It’s actually a lot less eventful than people think. Anyone who knows us knows how different we are. Even in Revols, our areas of expertise are so different. So we actually joke that Daniel is my “work-husband” since we work on the business side of things together, while Nav sticks to engineering and manufacturing. But I must say, carpooling in the morning and evening to and from work is definitely fun! So, yeah, not as challenging as people would assume - we like it!
Being that you work at a tech company, are you tech-savvy? If not, how difficult does this make your job?
A little secret... anyone who knows me knows that I am absolutely not tech-savvy! It’s kind of funny that I’m the marketing director of a tech startup but when it comes to issues with my phone, computer or printer, I’m completely clueless. It definitely has its challenges -- not related specifically to Revols but just in general -- with everything being on the computer, saving things to Dropbox, Google Drive etc… I’ve had my issues no doubt, but I’ve adapted and have definitely become more tech-savvy than I used to be. Besides, being married to an engineer doesn’t hurt!
So, is this the biggest challenge that you face at Revols as the Marketing Director? If not, what would you say is?
No, I would say always having A LOT to do and feeling like there’s never enough time. Also, we’re a really ambitious and very small team. We’re working in a crazy, fast-paced environment and so, we all wear many hats.
Now, describe yourself as a Marketing Director in one word.
What are your hopes for the future of Revols?
I have BIG hopes for Revols! With every step, it’s kind of amazing to see how we handle each phase of this journey and even surpass our own expectations. Whether it be participating in the HAX Accelerator, launching on Kickstarter, or manning a booth at CES -- it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come. So, I have the highest expectations that this is just the beginning for us. After our crowdfunding and pre-order deliveries, I see us in retail stores around the world, definitely continuing to participate in international trade shows like CES, and of course coming up with new products, etc. Possibly even another Kickstarter campaign one day, we’ll see…
Awesome! So, what’s the craziest part about working for Revols?
Probably a year and a half ago when I was juggling the launch of a 60-day Kickstarter campaign, commuting back and forth from Montreal to Shenzhen for 4 months at HAX -- all while planning our wedding! See, our wedding fell in the middle of all the chaos - but looking back, it just made for even better memories!
Okay, now let’s get to know you a little better. What is something surprising about you?
I’m a die hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan!
Who’s your favorite music artist?
What are your top 3 favorite songs?
I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues - Elton John
God Only Knows - Beach Boys

My playlists consist of everything from Britney Spears to The Backstreet Boys to Elton John and The Beach Boys.
